A 7-0 win over Nottingham Forest on the day the newly renovated Ewood Park opened and a 4-1 win over Rosenborg Trondheim – Mike Newell scoring three goals in just nine minutes – were the few highlights of an overall disappointing season at this time. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season, the club invested in three new players, with Maceo Rigters and the young goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen, in particular the Paraguayan international Roque Santa Cruz celebrating his breakthrough and ultimately scoring 19 Premier League goals. After a very disappointing start to the 1996/97 season, Harford resigned at the end of October when the club were bottom of the table and had yet to win their first ten games. The good trend did not last and Blackburn Rovers ended the 2003/04 season in a disappointing 15th place.
